Migrating code from legacy systems such as IBM, ALPHA and UNIX to JAVA, HTML or even ASPX can deliver new life to products with minimal investments and even greater cost savings. Consider the cost of 50 client MRP and MES systems written in COBOL or RPG which were originally purchased for 100K-400K in the 70's and 80's. Today, the same number of clients migrating to SAP or Oracle can exceed millions of dollars if you consider the price of the software, new equipment, conversions, training, implementing new new business practices, and maintenance. Purchasing a new MES or MRP environment can generate staggering expenses to a business including hidden cost and expenses. In most cases customers do not have access to source code which would enable a business to maintain the product themselves. The rates for enhancements or modifications by the software company will make changes prohibitive and many software companies do not maintain the changes in their updates or releases so the customer will have to pay for integration of prior changes for each update. The price for software maintenance support for many medium and large corporations would support a staff of resident developers. Many software companies even require you to use the product as-is and recommend that business change their practices to conform to the software application. Migration of Legacy code to WEB base applications enables a company to maintain its manufacturing and business practices, enables users to access extensive amounts of data, eliminates maintenance and support costs, and allows integration of new applications rapidly. A small development staff using the latest software tools can build and deploy applications in hours compared to weeks and months for the older Legacy environments. If your legacy products satisfies your business needs and you have the source code, and the largest issue of your user community is focused on data access and enhancement capabilities, then your business is a candidate for migration to a web applications and conversion of data to a relational database. The cost of conversion in most cases is less than half the cost of purchasing a new system and your company owns the code!. New tools for data access enable rapid migration of older Legacy data directly to Oracle and SQL databases. WEB development environment allow rapid prototyping and testing of applications in minutes compared to writing COBOL, RPGII and PL/I code with a screen editor. |
